We know for some of you it can be daunting to put yourself out there in the marketplace. That’s why we’re here to walk you through it step-by-step so you can get your journey started on Symposium.
Setting up your profile
Whether you use Symposium to help others or seek advice from others, it helps to fill in as many details in your profile as you can. This allows other users to get a better sense of who you are, what your field of interest or expertise is, your skills, your current fanbase, reviews from previous sessions, and your availability for scheduling.
To edit your profile, go to the top right corner of the Symposium home page and click your name. The dropdown menu will allow you to edit your profile picture by clicking the photo icon and edit your profile by clicking the “profile” button.
How to Create a Listing
- Click “Add an Offer” at the top of the profile page after logging in.
- Choose between the following options: 1-to-1, 1-to-many, or SymGram.
For the purposes of this post, we’ll be going through the process of setting up a 1-to-1 chat
Choose your visibility
Do you want to be publicly listed on Symposium or have your listing be a share only? If you only want those who you share the link with to see your listing, choose the latter option. Otherwise, leave it as “publicly listed”
Title your service
Make the title of your listing simple e.g. “Career & Personal Brand Management.”
Give a brief description
This will show up under your title in your listing. [Tip: Make your first sentence stand out to grab attention! Then, add any further descriptions of your service to give a better understanding of what you are providing and how you’ll be going about the consultation.]
Add your tags
For those who are publicly listed, it helps to add in as many relevant tags as you can to give your listing maximum exposure on Symposium. Tags are the keywords users would type in to search for content relevant to them.
Choose your category
Symposium offers a wide range of topics from arts, computer skills, and education to social media, tutoring, and much more. There is most likely a category that best fits your service, so choose wisely! However, if you don’t see anything that’s a proper fit, feel free to choose “other” for now. Feel free to send us a message at firstname.lastname@example.org so we can include a proper category for you.
Video or voice only?
This is entirely up to you, as depending on what kind of service you’re providing, video might be more necessary than with other services.
Price of Symtalk
How much will you be charging? One of the best parts about Symposium is you determine your own worth by setting your own rates. You can also offer free consultations if you’re just starting out or in a charitable mood!
Sometimes your client might want access to your session to have the information from the consultation available for future reference. You can set your own rates for these recordings as well.
You choose how long your sessions go for!
Align Start Times
You can choose to align your start times by 30 minute or 1 hour blocks. In the case that the duration of your sessions are under 30 minutes or in between 30 minutes and an hour, choosing this option ensures that sessions start at the top of every hour or half-hour, providing enough buffer room in between each session.
If you want your sessions automatically booked when a user chooses your services, click this option. This works if you set strict availability in your schedule and know for a fact you’re free to do consultations during these hours. If you’d rather confirm the booking once it’s been chosen, leave this blank. If you have a more open-ended schedule, it may be better to confirm ahead of time in case there isn’t much time in between the booking and chosen time slot.
Choose an image
Having a photo to go along with your listing will increase the likelihood of other users clicking. We highly recommend not skipping this step.
Choose Time Availability
You can either set the time you are available for sessions or choose when you are not available. While for most, it makes the most sense to set the times in which you are available, some people might have particular circumstances that prevent them from being available during certain times.
Choose One Time or Repeating
Is this a one-time listing or is this a service you’ll be providing regularly? Choose if you want to repost the listing every day, every weekday, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or yearly.
Start and End Time
You set your own hours! No strict schedule required with Symposium.
Choose an End Date
If you’re only offering a temporary service, you can choose for how long you want the listing to be posted.
After clicking “Finish”, you’ll be able to set up your bank card information. This allows you to receive payment as soon as your sessions are complete! If you’d rather deal with payment information later, you can skip this step for now.
Note: if you don’t set up payment at this stage, your listing will not be posted publicly.
